Tango is a partner dance that has influences from African, Native American and European culture. It is the result of a combination of the German Waltz, Czech Polka, Polish Mazurka, and Bohemian Schottische with the Spanish-Cuban Habanera, African Candome, and Argentinian Milonga. In tango, the steps are typically more gliding, but can vary widely in timing, speed, and character, and follow no single specific rhythm. Because the dance is led and followed at the level of individual steps, these variations can occur from one step to the next. The waltz (from German Walzer ) is a ballroom and folk dance, normally in triple time, performed primarily in closed position. The Viennese custom is to anticipate slightly the second beat of each bar, making it sound as if the third is late and creating a certain buoyancy.
